Breaching the gap between users and community
While Discord is one of the leading social platforms, especially among the gaming community, many aspects of the app make it difficult for users to find and interact with people who share similar interests. Our team set out to increase a sense of community by better connecting users to the broader gaming communities around them. Our primary method for increasing interaction is through a redesigned home page, placing emphasis on community involvement and access to specific servers tailored to users' interests.
Respecting Discord's recognizable UI while improving accessibility
Discord's UI stands out from competitors through its persistent multi-pane architecture and vertical "Server Rail". Our user testing indicated that Discord's community benefits from its distinct layout.
My role as a designer was to add onto the existing architecture while respecting what already works. the New Home page maintains the same core layout while adding algorithmically generated servers to join based on friends activity. Users will be recommended popular servers based on interests determined by search data in addition to what servers friend accounts are members of.
